The intense cyber attacks in October last year, cost the news site almost a week’s downtime. According to the Salvadoran magazine Factum, this was one of the consequences for investigating the contradictions and lack of transparency of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. The attacks were part of a wider campaign to discredit the media.
Prior to the cyber attacks, journalists had been harassed on social networks by people close to the government and had not been allowed to enter press conferences at the Presidential House. On 13 October, the Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks started, and on the third day, when the magazine’s website went offline, a businessman placed a paid advertisement in the press claiming to have bribed the news outlets’ editor. The magazine responded to the accusations in social media as they were not able to defend itself on its own website.
Qurium’s forensics investigation attributes the attacks and places the attacker at the Universidad de Oriente (UNIVO). The university collaborated by identifying the person and the machine from which the attacks were carried out. From this point on, the university did not want to provide more evidence to the investigation. A notarial document signed by the attacker released the university from all responsibility.

La Revista Factum estuvo una semana bajo ciberataques por denunciar corrupción del presidente de El Salvador
- El gobierno de El Salvador había prohibido a la Revista Factum asistir a sus ruedas de prensa y la estaba sometiendo a una campaña de desprestigio
- El presunto autor de los ataques ha sido identificado como un ingeniero informático que actuaba desde la Universidad de Oriente, en El Salvador
- La universidad niega el acceso de Qurium Media Foundation a las pruebas forenses
Los intensos ciberataques en octubre del año pasado le costaron al sitio web casi una semana fuera de línea. Según la revista salvadoreña Factum, esta fue una de las consecuencias por investigar las contradicciones y falta de transparencia del presidente de El Salvador Nayib Bukele. Los ataques formaban parte de una campaña más amplia de desprestigio del medio.
Antes de los ataques cibernéticos, los periodistas habían sufrido acoso en redes sociales por parte de personas afines al gobierno, además de no habérseles permitido entrar en ruedas de prensa en la Casa Presidencial. El 13 de octubre llegaron los ataques de Denegación de Servicio (DDoS) y, al tercer día, cuando la web de la revista estaba fuera de línea, un empresario publicó un anuncio pagado en prensa donde aseguraba haber sobornado al director de la revista. Esta respondió a las acusaciones en los medios sociales, al no poder defenderse en su propia web.
El informe forense de Qurium Media Foundation atribuye los ataques y sitúa al atacante en la Universidad de Oriente (UNIVO). La universidad colaboró identificando al autor y la máquina desde la que realizaron los ataques. Un documento notarial firmado por el atacante libera a la universidad de cualquier responsabilidad.
